Tips on choosing images for your website

‘A picture says a thousand words’ is a very apt saying when it comes to selecting the right photographs for your marketing. Low-quality photography and poorly chosen images can quickly put off potential customers. Here are our top image selection tips.

Keeping it real is definitely in vogue, using photography to show your company in it’s best light and giving customers a real insight into the people and premises behind the product and service is in high demand. Your photographs need to be of a high quality and show real believable personality. Use relaxed and candid images of your team, inviting shots of premises that are clean and tidy but in use. Avoid overly staged and posed shots.

If you can’t obtain high quality images of your business due to financial or time constraints then library stock imagery maybe for you. Avoid generic imagery where possible and stay away from twee stereotypical shots. Instead choose something that relates to your business without painting a false picture.

Consider using images that set a relevant mood, be that fast paced city or relaxing countryside calm.

For product imagery consistency is vital. Images don’t have to be all on white backgrounds but they do need to sit well together and focus on the product. A mix on landscape and portrait images can be distracting, choose one or the other, using a square image can be a great compromise here.

Use lifestyle type imagery in banners and as additional views but keep the main image clean, simple and uniform. You can afford to be much braver and dramatic in banners and advertisements.
